It's for the sniffer. I'll have to look into the magic bit, but it's obvious enough that someone else would have thought about it and done it already (or maybe I"m overly optimistic)
I could have a version without the sniffer to merge to Galaxy, but it's not super ideal.

Is this needed for an converter or for the sniffer?
For the sniffer we do not have a good solution for this I'm afraid.
Does the datatype has a magic bit or something similar?
