As you correctly identified the original implementation, in spite of being present in the Galaxy distribution, is treated as deprecated.

However I know about three sample tracking implementation based on Galaxy's old sample tracking.

I am not sure about the current state of the first two but the last one is being used in a pilot project for tracking using smartphones and QR codes here at PSU and is under our somewhat active development.
