We are interested in making some of our tools only available to a subset of users. It looks to me like all galaxy tools are available to all galaxy users. We were thinking about patching our local galaxy to use the same roles that are used for data files for tools as well. Is this something others are interested in? Is this something that's already being worked on by the galaxy core team? (We'd hate to duplicate effort if someone is already doing this) Thanks, Dave
We're not working on this, but would be happy to integrate such a contribution (assuming it would use the existing role system). -- jt (composed on my phone) On Nov 2, 2010, at 11:58 AM, Dave Walton <Dave.Walton@jax.org> wrote:

Dave, We have been thinking along the same line since not all tools are suitable or just too overwhelming for endusers and having group-linkage would be great to have. I have only seen examples of linking the executing of tools to usergroups (like the dynamic tool_refresh mod) but in our local instance all (including non admins) are still able to execute it... not sure why and what is wrong. It would be better to have user or group dependent left panel. Dave we would be very interested in something like this, as well. In the meantime, may I remind you of the variable "$userEmail". We take advantage of this to trigger different functionalities of our self-written tools, depending on who is using them. So, every user has access to all the tools, but they only work for those users who are allowed to execute them. It is not a nice solution, but it is simple and it works.
