Hi Dave,

Thanks for the initiatives.

  • About the twitter GxyIndia is really fine and it could be possible that galaxy_bharat could get more attention in future. Probably we can keep both as of now. So as of now please continue GxyIndia if we want we can also switch to galaxy_bharat or keep both of them. I have registered galaxy_bharat and ready to give it to others if required, just registered in case if we want to change it. Or it can be incorporated into tweetdeck. So please add @galaxy_bharat and also @telukir .
Graphics looks fine. We need to answer ourselves following questions to use the colours:
  • If we are using colours for commercial purposes? If not then it is fine. According to my understanding useGalaxy don't have commercial purpose. However, to run the useGalaxy some money is required and collecting such money will be commercial purpose or not,  it is not completely clear. This text could help us a bit: Please note that as per the provisions of Section 3 of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act, 1950, any colourable imitation of an “emblem” when used for the purpose of any trade, business, calling or profession, or in the title of any patent, or in any trade mark or design, without previous permission of the Central Govt. or its authorised officer is prohibited and the penalty for its violation is prescribed under Section 5 as a fine of up to ₹ 5000. The word “emblem” includes the “Indian National Flag” as defined in Section 2 read with the Schedule to the said Act. Thus, a colourable imitation of the Indian National Flag cannot be used in logo for a business without prior permission of the Central Government or its authorised officer. This appears to be the legal position.
  • As of now it is completely clear if we can use the colours, but the graphic is not offensive but probably we need permission. I'll get to know more about this, probably until then it is better not to use. I'll update soon on this.
  • Yes, for the list would be better to have one person as admin rather than multiple persons, if required we can make more admins but initially it is not required
  • Yes, I'm fine with Github. But if any of you just want to put the text into the document we can use this Google Doc later I/Dave can put into the github.
  • Yes, having gitter channel would be very helpful.

I would like to host the usegalaxy.in in small scale because to talk with people about it, it has to exist and that gives more motivation towards it. I'm actively looking for short term small scale hosting options. Please let me know if any of you can provide the hosting space. I could try to get this ready for the Galaxy-P 2020 workshop and according to the workshop requirements. Which would be a kind of starting point UseGalaxy instance.

Regards,

Hi Pratik all,

@pratikomics

I'll add you once we settle on an account name.

Is @galaxy_in_india taken? Or is it too long? How does @galaxy_bhaarat sound? @GxyIndia is fine too.

@galaxy_in_india is soooo meta! (but would it be confusing?)  I quite like @galaxy_bharat (one "a", right?), as it implies the creator of the account knows more about India than I do.  :-)

@galaxy_bharat is available.  I think I can easily rename the @GxyIndia account that I have created.

Also, please take a look at the graphics at https://twitter.com/GxyIndiaIs it offensive to take the colours from the Indian flag?  Other ideas?

Folks, let me know what account name you prefer!

Yes. All copied on this mail can be list admins?

There is no limit on the number of admins.  It's just tedious to be one.  I'll add you.

Thanks!

I'll start on the hub edits tomorrow.

Excellent - and thanks!

Anshu, we should start seriously thinking about a Galaxy-P workshop in July/August 2020.  We have some proteogenomics and metaproteomics workshops in place and can add more from other team members.

We should also start looking for projects (funded / funding opportunities for.../ etc.). There were at least two projects that we were approached for, when I visited India, last (December 2018).

Thanks for keeping this rolling...

Hi All,

First, I apologise for the long delay in responding to responses.  I always think things will be easier after GCC than they actually end up being. :-/  Thanks Pratik, for the poke.

Here's what I will do in the next day: (all are easy)
1. Create a Twitter account
@galaxy_india is already taken (those people are going to love us)
    @galaxyindia, @galaxyin, @galaxy_in are already taken.
@GxyIndia is not taken. I will create that now.
We can use Tweetdeck to give multiple access.
If you want to tweet from that account then please send me your Twitter ID
2. Create a mailing list
Please let me know if you want to be a list admin
3. Create a draft Galaxy-India web page presence on GalaxyProject.org.
I can do this.  If you have a GitHub account. then you can submit pull requests
Otherwise, send me edits and I will apply them.

(4. Should we also create a Gitter Channel? Eventually?)

Over the next few weeks we should draft a community launch announcement, and then post it somewhere.
I suggest the Galaxy News page, but it can be anywhere.  And then we link to it and cross-post it everywhere we can think of.

Alternatively, we can wait to announce until we have an event.

Which leads us to the long term. There have been a bunch of great ideas posted here.  Now we need to prioriitise them.

I see Glory, Anshu, Kiran, and Pratik taking the lead, as you all understand the situation in India way better than Mo or I do.  I an say that the core Galaxy team will support this effort in every way can.  This includes a lot of promotion, and even sending team members to India.  (Hmm, Nuwan is in Sri Lanka.  It would be cheap to get him to events.)  We can also provide scholarships / fellowships for travel and events.

That's it for now.  Look for followup emails in the next day.

Hi Dave and all,

First off please excuse me for the delay in response as I was traveling outstation. I am eager and enthusiastic about the Galaxy India community and would like to spearhead the development and growth of this community. I believe many students and researchers could really benefit from this program and would, in turn, help Galaxy expand its reach worldwide.

I like the idea of short term goal first to build the traction and devise new ideas to engage Indian researchers, students; and train and absorb them into the community.

I can manage the twitter handle for the Galaxy India Community and route the traffic to the webpage within galaxyproject.org (so it's a good idea to create a webpage). Gradually afterward, based on the engagement and responses from the user, we can begin using the mailing list.

This is my thoughts for now. But to start Galaxy India community we need to begin from somewhere and I believe twitter handle is a good way to give it a start at least.

I look forward to hearing from everyone.

Yours sincerely,

Subject: Galaxy India Community

Hello all,

All of us discussed possibly launching a Galaxy India Community this week.  I would like to keep that conversation going and hopefully launch this community.

Galaxy does not have an official process for launching a community.  We have several things we can do, and what we do depends on the community itself.

Short term Goals?
What would the goals of the community be?  At least to start with, I think the goal is to connect Indians who are interested in Galaxy.  It would also be a way to let people know when something is going on in or near India.

Community Channels
With those "community building" goals in mind, here are some thoughts on how to do that, right now.

Twitter: I recommend we establish a Twitter account, and that community and team members (me/Mo) be able to tweet from the account.  We do this for Galaxy UK and Australia.

Mailing list: We can easily support a Galaxy-India mailing list hosted at galaxyproject.org.  However, I am not sure if this is worthwhile or not.  We just shut down the Galaxy-UK and Galaxy-France mailing lists because they weren't being used.  What do people think?

Web pages: Galaxy UK and Galaxy Australia have web pages (but the Galaxy UK don't get any attention).  At minimum we can create a page for the community on galaxyproject.org.  Any ideas?

Longer term Goals
Events and services are two ways that we can help this community thrive.  However, both of these take planning, and significant time and resources.  I recommend keeping our eyes open for training opportunities, and then seeing what we can make happen.  There must be national and regional bioinformatics meetings that we can propose training for.

That's a start.  Discussion is ... required!

Thanks,
Dave C
