Hi Caroline,
If your remote data is accessible via the filesystem (i.e. via NFS), you can "link" it into Galaxy through Data Libraries. Please see the documentation on this feature here:

The "Copy data into Galaxy?" checkbox is now a select list (yes/no) and there are some other minor interface changes, but the rest of the information is still correct.
