Hello Galaxy India Leadership! 1. You have probably heard that BOSC and GCC and holding a joint event this year. BCC2020 <https://bcc2020.github.io/>. 2. And you may have heard that we are going online <https://bcc2020.github.io/blog/going-virtual> instead of in-person. 3. *You will not have heard* that we also going global <https://github.com/bcc2020/bcc2020.github.io/blob/worldwide/_posts/2020-04-…>. This is a long email, about the *positive* implications of this news for the Indian bioinformatics community *1. Going Global* We are planning to offer BCC content during reasonable hours in both hemispheres <https://bcc2020.sched.com/>. For the *meeting* itself we will likely have pre-recorded talks, and live posters, demos and BoFs (details will be tricky. For the *training* before the meeting, we will offer live and sometimes different content in the two hemispheres. For the CoFest we have dreams of it being active 24 hours a day as it rotates around the planet. And we are requesting your help. *2. Getting the word out* We will announce registration and the training schedule this week. Once we do that, we need your help spreading the work to the Indian Bioinformatics Community. Registration for BCC is a fraction of the cost <https://bcc2020-register.eventbrite.com> of a live event, and no travel is required. All people need is a good internet connection. *It also means that Indian researchers will be able to present at BCC.* *Once we post this (probably in the next 48 hours) then please redistribute wherever you think it would be interesting.* *3. Training:* We have a few openings in our BCC East Training schedule. Training has to be live, and several instructors from the original live schedule aren't available. Dear All, Hope you all are fine and enjoying good health!. It has been long since we shared emails. I am writing this email to share an important opportunity with you. My institute is going to host International Symposium on Bioinformatics 2019 (InSyb2019) from 21st to 22nd December, 2019 in collaboration with APBioNet at Jalandhar, Punjab, India. I believe that this is a great opportunity to showcase Galaxy Platform to the participants. I will be happy if someone from Galaxy community leaders can joins us during this two day event, particularly for the second day, dedicated to workshops. Sonika is already coming to grace this occasion and it will be great if one more team member can join her to make the workshop more . Hi, It was really great meeting everyone and great to see the Galaxy community gaining momentum in India. I've got in contact with some folks from the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka, and they too have expressed an interest in participating in these regional efforts. At present, the community in Sri Lanka is somewhat nascent, so they may play more of an observational role, but in future, perhaps the community can grow to contribute additional resources to this effort. INCOB 2019 Galaxy India Report

Hello all, INCOB (and GOBLET) ran last week in Jakarta. Harpreet was able to make it, and was actually pretty prominent, moderating several sessions and presenting a talk. Galaxy was also pretty prominent at both GOBLET and INCOB. Here's the report. QFAB (Gareth's organization) and the Galaxy Training Network both renewed our *GOBLET *memberships and both groups expect to have a more prominent role in the coming year. Not yet sure what form that involvement will take. There were actually 4 Galaxy-related events on the program at INCOB. (There was an EpiMOLAS <https://galaxyproject.org/use/docmethyl/> talk that I had missed.) The talk by Gareth, the workshop (almost all Simon), and the breakout (Dave, Gareth, Nuwan, Farhan Sjaugi (Malaysia), Harpreet, and Asif) were all successes (in my not so humble opinion). There was a great deal of interest in Galaxy, and in regional Galaxies especially. We are likely to see Galaxy ASEAN and Galaxy Korea communities come out of INCOB 2019. Hello all, *Introductions and limit?* Please Welcome Sonika Tyagi, Monash University, Melbourne Harpreet Singh, Head of Bioinformatics, HMV Jalandhar, Punjab To the Galaxy India planning group. I will let them introduce themselves (I have known Sonika electronically for 3 years, but I don't think I have ever met either of them in person. And that puts us at 8 people on 4 continents, 6 of us with ties to India, and two of us from the core Galaxy Project. *I suggest that 8 is a good number for this core group and that we resist further increasing our size beyond that.* And, I encourage everyone to introduce themselves as well. I'll start. I help coordinate training and outreach for the Galaxy Project, and have been doing this for 8 years. Before that I did the same for the GMOD Project. I'm a computer person by training, and I first stumbled into bioinformatics in 2000. *I have no particular knowledge of India.* https://galaxyproject.org/people/dave-clements/ Now, I'll try to summarize what's been going on. (Please add in whatever I forget.) *Online Community First* We are planning to start as an online community first, with a Twitter account (got it), mailing list (probably this one after we clear out these early emails), and a Gitter channel (easy). We have not decided when to launch / announce all this. *Connections* Anshu Bhardwaj (OSDD + more) has suggested linking any training with the Skills India Program, and coordinating any launch we did with Nature India. *Events Next* Anshu and Pratik Jagtap (Galaxy-P + more) have been discussing a possible workshop-meeting in India in 2020, possibly at CSIR-IMTECH, and possibly focusing on proteomics. We also have Glory Basumata at IIT Guwahati, so that may be an option too. This event (or events) may be a good opportunity / time to launch the community. We could also launch a training program and/or coordinate training efforts in India. *Funding And Stability* Funding assures that this effort continues, and that someone somewhere is being paid to coordinate things. I don't know anything about funding in India, but you all do. :-) In the short term, Mo Heydarian (Galaxy + more) and I can probably convince our funders to support participant scholarships for any events. We can also try valiantly to get a Galaxy PI to a launch event (but we can't guarantee it). No matter what the funding picture is, Mo and I will provide maximum promotion, just like we do now for other communities *Platform?* In the long term we may want to support a UseGalaxy.in platform. Kiran Telukunta (U Freiburg + more) already owns the URL. :-) I argue that this should be pursued last as it will need funding, maintenance, and staff. Harpreet might be coming to INCOB where we will be discussing how to build regional communities.* So this goal may end up moving faster than I expect it to. And, as always I have typed too much. Hi All, One of the people I contacted about a Galaxy Australia / Asia / Pacific community and platform was Sonika Tyagi <https://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=en&user=ysfbgQsAAAAJ&view_op=list_w…>, of Monash University in Melbourne. Sonika has been involved in Galaxy for a while and has done workshops in India. She was involved in planning the Galaxy AustralAsia Meeting in 2017. Sonika can't make it to INCOB next month, *but she is interested in the efforts of this group, and would like to be included in discussions.* Sonika also suggested contacting Dr Harpreet Singh, Head of Bioinformatics at HMV Jalandhar, Punjab, about INCOB *and about this group.* What do people think? Should we bring In Sonika? Should we bring in Dr Singh? I'll contact Dr. Singh about INCOB shortly, but I won't mention Galaxy India, unless this group tells me to.
