Regarding participation in InSyb2019 at Jalandhar, Punjab, India

Dear All, Hope you all are fine and enjoying good health!. It has been long since we shared emails. I am writing this email to share an important opportunity with you. My institute is going to host International Symposium on Bioinformatics 2019 (InSyb2019) from 21st to 22nd December, 2019 in collaboration with APBioNet at Jalandhar, Punjab, India. I believe that this is a great opportunity to showcase Galaxy Platform to the participants. I will be happy if someone from Galaxy community leaders can joins us during this two day event, particularly for the second day, dedicated to workshops. Sonika is already coming to grace this occasion and it will be great if one more team member can join her to make the workshop more . Also, it will be a great help if we can get some funding from GALAXY Community for this event. Kindly let me know if it is feasible for some spare some resource person and/or funding for this event. Thanks & Best Regards Harpreet Singh

Hi Harpreet, all, Thanks for the good news about InSyb2019. This is a good opportunity to showcase Galaxy, and I am glad to hear that Sonika will be there. Unfortunately, I am very pessimistic about convincing anyone else from the US, European, or Australian teams to travel to India that close to Christmas. So, I don't think we will get anyone else to help Sonika for this event. On the plus side, one of US Galaxy PIs (Anton Nekrutenko, if I remember correctly) is actually eager to travel to India at some point. This means that if schedules were to work out, then we might be able to get him to India for a Galaxy India launch at some point next year. And I am only a little pessimistic about getting funding to support this event, so that may actually be possible. :-) What would the funding be used for, and how much would we be asking for? I know from past experience that asking for funds for travel fellowships is more likely to get approved, then say, funding for conference rooms or catering. Hi Pratik / Harpreet, I would be only until 19-Nov in India. However, please do suggest a Google Meet so that we can plan to showcase any small training presentations or we can come up with other ideas. Hi Team, It is great to know that Galaxy India is building up momentum. I would be available to share session/talk/co-ordinate training sessions during any launch event throughout India. Currently, I am based in Bangalore, India and working with an organization here. My job permits me off on weekends and requires approval for advance leaves on weekdays. It would be great if I could contribute and join hands in supporting the initiative that promotes the growth of a scientific community. Dear Dave Clements, Thanks for your prompt reply ans motivation. I know its Christmas time and it will be difficult to travel during that period. But your, support and motivation will also be of great help for us, especially Sonika to make a great impact by training the participants on GALAXY during this event. I will discuss and let you know for what purpose we are looking forward for funding. Bur for sure, it will not be for catering, conference rooms, eatables etc. Thanks and Best Regards, Harpreet Singh On Wed, Nov 13, 2019 at 11:21 PM Dave Clements <clementsgalaxy@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi Harpreet, all, Given that each of us has made some progress in our plans for Galaxy India,
can we use this email thread to update each other of the progress - so that everyone is on the same page?
Harpreet, we discussed funding for scholarships and local travel for speakers for InSyb2019. Although we had never consciously thought about our criteria before, we have only funded events that are Galaxy-centric, such as the recently completed Galaxy Africa, or scholarships for Galaxy Community Conferences InSyb2019 is not a Galaxy-centric event, which means that we won't be funding travel and scholarships. I remain optimistic for getting a Galaxy PI to India for some future event. Sorry I don't have better news, Dave C

Dear Dave, Thanks for having discussion on our idea of funding during the InSyB2019 event. The news is not positive. But, we will certainly look forward for some GALAXY-centirc event in the coming years. For informaiton of all of you, we have planned a workshop on NGS Data Analysis using GALAX platform and requested Gareth Price to help us by providing dediccted access to the GALAXY Australia Server. The workshop will start by an Introduction to GALAXY Platform by Gareth (online through Skype/Zoom) and later on Sonika will take care of the workshop through demonstrations and Hands-onn practical sessions. So, this will be a first GALAXY Platform based workshop in our region (Probably India) and we are optimistic of getting good participation. Hello Everyone, A few updates from my side: 1) We received a small travel grant from ASM and IUSSTF( https://asm.org/Fellowships/Indo-US-Professorship) that will be helpful in conducting a workshop entitled 'Bioinformatics Analysis of Functions Expressed by Microbiomes' at CSIR-IMTech. I will be working with Anshu and her colleagues to conduct a workshop sometime in Sept/Oct/Nov. We can plan on inviting someone from Europe (Saskia?Berenice?) to present the Galaxy metagenomics and metatranscriptomics portion - while I can take care of the metaproteomics section. We will also need to decide on whether we set up a server in India and use Galaxy services as a back up. 2) Along with Brian Searle (ISB, Seattle), I applied for Chan-Zuckerberg grant where we have suggested running some new workflows on *usegalaxy servers. If our Galaxy.in server is ready - we can ask researchers in india to run workflows on this resource. With Regards, Pratik On Sun, Dec 8, 2019 at 10:38 PM Pratik Jagtap <pjagtap@umn.edu> wrote:

Harpreet, we discussed funding for scholarships and local travel for speakers for InSyb2019. Although we had never consciously thought about our criteria before, we have only funded events that are Galaxy-centric, such as the recently completed Galaxy Africa, or scholarships for Galaxy Community Conferences
InSyb2019 is not a Galaxy-centric event, which means that we won't be funding travel and scholarships.
I remain optimistic for getting a Galaxy PI to India for some future event.

Hello Everyone,
A few updates from my side:
1) We received a small travel grant from ASM and IUSSTF( https://asm.org/Fellowships/Indo-US-Professorship) that will be helpful in conducting a workshop entitled 'Bioinformatics Analysis of Functions Expressed by Microbiomes' at CSIR-IMTech.
With Regards,

Hello Everyone,
Hope that you are doing well.
Given that each of us has made some progress in our plans for Galaxy India, can we use this email thread to update each other of the progress - so that everyone is on the same page?
I will be in India from December 1st to 15th and we can all also decide on a date to discuss on what will need to be prioritized.
Harpreet, I will be arriving December 1st at 5:15 AM in Delhi and will be travelling to Karnal, immediately. I will be in Chandigarh in the afternoon of December 5th and leave for Delhi on December 6th at 12 noon. The plan is to present a talk at IMTech on 5th. Would any of the days work for you to talk via phone or meet?
Anshu will be able to update regarding her travel plans.
Waiting to hear from you.
With Regards, Pratik
