There are lots of people reading this list who could probably help, but like most other mailing lists, you need to provide enough information about what you specifically want to achieve for anyone reading your posts to be able to provide you with useful help. Your original post asked about "adding a data format (tar file) to galaxy". That might sound perfectly clear and straightforward to you as part of something you're working on, but unfortunately for the rest of us, the best answer depends on your specific goals and skills. For example, as Nate asked specifically:

Are you hoping to create a datatype for a tar file that does not get untarred and remains as a single file, or are do you want to add the ability to upload a tar file and have it untarred, creating >multiple datasets in the process?

Those two example possibilities would have different solutions - is either of those your goal or is it something else?

ok, thanks - that helps us understand what you want to do, but I'm still unclear about what you are trying to achieve - eg I have no clue what kinds of files are you hoping to 'upload together' or what you want your users to be able to do with them once they're uploaded. Those details make a huge difference - uploading a tar file is presumably just the beginning of some more complex process since it's not a very useful activity by itself.

As an as yet uninformed guess, you might find the new external API useful for scripting uploads directly into Galaxy libraries - the code and examples are in [your galaxy root]/scripts/api - so you could script the uncompression and upload externally - without needing to add a new 'tar' datatype to Galaxy
